National Park Hohe Tauern

The Hohe Tauern is the highest range of the Alps east of the Brenner Pass; it includes the highest mountains in Austria. The range is part of the Central Eastern Alps. It is in the Austrian states of Salzburg, Carinthia, and Tyrol - with a small part in the Italian province of Bolzano-Bozen. The Hohe Tauern National Park is the widest protected area in the Alps. The highest peak is the Grossglockner, 3.798 m.

From the geological point of view, the park lies in a particular area, where metamorphic rocks are prominent. Toghether with Vedrette di Ries-Aurina Natural Park(Provincia Autonoma di Bolzano) and Zillertaler Alpen Natural Park(Tirol), the Hohe Tauern Park represents the wider protected area in the central Europe.
