Canyoning (known as canyoneering in the U.S.) means descending canyons using a variety of techniques. Canyons are narrow gorges usually cut into the stone by the thousand-year passage of a river. These technical descents will often require rappels (abseils) and rope work. Anyway, the emphasis in the sport is usually on aesthetics and fun rather than pure technical difficulty, as canyoning is enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels.
